GREECE — Flyer “Delphi — Grèce”

Tourist brochure on the Delphi Valley. “Legend has it that Apollo, god of light and music, came from Knossos in the form of a dolphin, to take Delphi (Delphi) under his high protection. It is to this transfiguration of the god into a dolphin (delphini) that the town owes its name. Delphi’s history dates back to Mycenaean times, but it was in the 6th century BC that the spiritual and moral prestige of this great religious and political centre reached its peak. In this period, Delphi’s fame and glory were such that, when the cities of the Delphic Amphictyony decided to rebuild the temple of Apollo, which had been destroyed by fire, all the Greek cities, as well as numerous barbarian princes, spontaneously offered their material assistance. The offerings totalled the colossal sum of 3,000 talents. The cities that claimed the god’s favour accumulated such valuable gifts that they had to be kept in small temple-like structures, known to this day as ‘Treasures.’”
