Delphi\u2019s history dates back to Mycenaean times, but it was in the 6th century BC that the spiritual and moral prestige of this great religious and political centre reached its peak. In this period, Delphi\u2019s fame and glory were such that, when the cities of the Delphic Amphictyony decided to rebuild the temple of Apollo, which had been destroyed by fire, all the Greek cities, as well as numerous barbarian princes, spontaneously offered their material assistance. The offerings totalled the colossal sum of 3,000 talents.
